Fierce Gales Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the country.

Severe gusts hitting velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 households lacking electricity and forced authorities to halt in excess of 100 aircraft departures, according to local media.

The winds are affecting the whole South Island and southern parts of the North Island, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have issued uncommon red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in key areas such as these major districts.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors, stay off roads, and get ready for further utility disruptions.

Broad Destruction and Emergency Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting homes predominantly in the South Island, while agencies report that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Regional news have indicated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, while trees and electricity poles have been brought down by the gusts.

Within the capital, a person was killed after being struck by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Flights to and from the city have been halted as a result of the gusts, and various routes and public facilities are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action Alongside Harsh Weather

The wild winds on this day occur while tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been described as a "mega strike", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the extreme weather has forced them to modify some of their plans, with various open-air gatherings shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Similar gusts are also sweeping Australia, bringing a heatwave to the remote areas.

Agencies have issued burning restrictions for concern about forest fires.
