Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
